Dear North Central Division Members,

Welcome to the website for our upcoming divisional conference to be held February 22-24 at Western Michigan University.  I believe that we have put together an outstanding group of performances and clinic sessions.  Additionally, I’m excited to include our mini-conducting symposium as a new addition to our conference agenda.

Many thanks go to Dr. Scott Boerma and the staff at Western Michigan University.  They have been working tirelessly preparing for our membership attendance in February.  In order for us to provide the best convention possible please take advantage of registration now.

I encourage all of you to send students to perform in the Intercollegiate Band under the direction of Dr. Jamie Nix.  Additionally, I hope that many of you and or your students will apply to conduct in the mini-conducting symposium with guest clinician Dr. Mallory Thompson.  Links to all information are listed under each area on the website.

Attendance is crucial in order to make a great divisional conference.  I hope you will be there!

We are excited to welcome you to Western Michigan University for the CBDNA North Central Division Conference on February 22-24.  In addition to experiencing the fine performing ensembles, interesting clinics, and mini-conducting symposium, I believe that you will find our facilities enjoyable, and maybe you’ll get a chance to get to know Kalamazoo a bit!  Of course, you will be introduced to some new (and old) works that may inspire you to perform them with your bands, and you’ll certainly enjoy catching up with each other throughout the event.  I personally look forward to any opportunity I can get to connect with friends and meet new people in our field at these conferences each year.

In order to help us plan well for this event, please register on this website in the near future.  The links at the top of the screen should make it easy for you to register not only for the conference, but also to apply to participate in the conducting symposium and to nominate your students for the Intercollegiate Band.  (These deadlines are coming up soon!)  You will also see hotel/travel information on this site.  The link will direct you to the conference hotel, which is holding a block of rooms for us only until January 21.  Since shuttles will take you to and from this hotel, you’ll want to make sure you get booked there.  If you are flying to Kalamazoo, this hotel also provides a free shuttle from the Kalamazoo Airport.

UPDATE: The Conducting Symposium sessions are open for all paid registrants to observe.  It will take place in the Dalton Center Recital Hall located directly off the lobby where Registration is taking place.

Mallory Thompson is director of bands, professor of music, coordinator of the conducting program, and holds the John W. Beattie Chair of Music at Northwestern University. In 2003 she was named a Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence. As the third person in the university's history to hold the director of bands position, Dr. Thompson conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting, and administers all aspects of the band program. Thompson has recorded five albums with the Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble on the Summit Records label.

Dr. Thompson received the Bachelor of Music Education degree and Master of Music degree in conducting from Northwestern University, where she studied conducting with John P. Paynter and trumpet with Vincent Cichowicz. She received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with Donald Hunsberger.


Dr. Jamie L. Nix


UPDATE: All Intercollegiate Band rehearsals are open for observation.  They take place in Rehearsal Room B in the Dalton Music building, just down the hallway from Registration.  The rehearsal schedule is available in the Conference Program.



Dr. Nix is director of wind ensemble activities, professor of music, and holds The Hal J. Gibson Distinguished Chair in Conducting at Columbus State University's Schwob School of Music. Appointed in 2010, Dr. Nix conducts the Schwob Wind Ensemble and Wind Orchestra, coordinates the graduate wind band conducting program, teaches advanced undergraduate conducting, and hosts the Annual Conductors Workshop. Previous posts include serving as associate director of bands and the Donald R. Shepherd assistant professor of conducting at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and assistant director of bands at The University of Texas at Austin Butler School of Music.



A conference registration of $125 is required of all attendees, presenters, and conductors.
